Summit of the Americas

The third Summit of the Americas took place in Québec city, Québec, Canada, on the weekend of April 20, 2001.

To avoid incidents such as those that have previously happened in Seattle, Prague or Montréal with anti-globalization movement protesters, a 3-metre high and about 4-kilometre long security fence was built around the area where the Summit took place.
The Police responded to protesters by firing tear gas canisters, water canon and rubber bullets. So much tear gas was used that delegates were incommoded in their meeting halls. To that point, the Québec city protests were one of the largest anti-globalization demonstrations.

Due partially to the resistance from the leaders of some poorer countries, no deal was reached regarding the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
